The Hoffmann Dovetail Joining System is used in woodworking, furniture manufacturing, window and door production, architectural millwork designs, store fixtures, custom and production picture framing shops, pre-fab housing and much more, in shops and plants around the globe.
To best suit an ever expanding range of joining application, a total of five different Hoffmann Dovetail Keys and corresponding Dovetail Router Bit sizes are offered, designated as W-0, W-1, W-2, W-3 and W-4.
The “W” designations refer to the cross-sections of the Keys (the size of the "bowtie"), and Keys in each size are available in a variety of different lengths.
The cross-section dimensions of W-4 Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are approx. 15/16” wide and 5/8” tall (24mm by 26mm).
Hoffmann W-4 Dovetail Keys are available in lengths from 1 9/16” up to 4” (40mm – 100mm) – see chart below.
Hoffmann Dovetail Keys, size W-4, are our largest current size for special woodworking applications, including miter joints, butt joints, compound miter joints and end-to-end joints. The W-4 Dovetail Keys are much larger in both width and height compared to W-3 Dovetail Keys, and are capable of exerting significantly more clamping pressure and holding strength.
Typical uses include post and beam construction, curtain wall systems, sunrooms, patio covering structures, heavy timber joinery, sauna and steam-room assembly, outdoor furniture and park benches, commercial projects, large window and door systems, etc.
Solid wood W-4 Keys are available in cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, walnut, wenge - these wood keys are a great way to incorporate design accents into furniture joinery.
Hoffmann W-4 Dovetail Keys can be processed on most freestanding P-series machines and on professional bench-top models (M-series) with an upgraded router motor. A 1000 watt router motor with an 8mm collect is necessary to use W-4 router bits. For continuous use in a production environment, we offer purpose-build machines with even larger motors.
